Exploring Coltrane's legacy
Over the last two decades, Jazz in August has staged around 180 concerts introducing our audience to the leading jazz innovators both from the music's homeland in United States, and from Europe, where creative jazz has flourished for many years – a duality which we have been keen to explore. Another constant feature of Jazz in August has been to present line-ups and musical projects previously unheard in Portugal, instituting a coherent programming policy unrivalled in this country. And since 2000, this coherent approach has gained the festival an international profile, with Jazz in August receiving regular reviews in leading jazz journals.
Jazz in August 2006 looks predominantly to the US, celebrating the historical phenomenon of John Coltrane, whose presence in contemporary jazz has persisted long after his untimely death in 1967. The reworking of one of Coltrane's important works, Ascension (1965), in Electric Ascension, by the sax player Larry Ochs and the Rova Saxophone Quartet, brings together a line-up of 13 first rate musicians. One of John Coltranes's most significant works for a larger ensemble, Ascension is here rediscovered without losing any of its intrinsic qualities.
Closing the festival (12 August) we will have Anthony Braxton in a sextet of his students at Wesleyan University, in a clear allusion to his previous appearance at Jazz in August in 2000, with the Ghost Trance Ensemble Dectet, also comprising his students at the time, now established professionals.
The music on offer, reflecting line-ups which range from solos to ensemble, will offer the audience samples of a comprehensive range of currents in contemporary jazz, underlining the fragmented nature of the genre: neofree from Orkestrova Electric Ascension and the Lisbon Improvisation Players, new impro from the trio of Larry Ochs, Fred Frith and Le Quan Ninh, chamber jazz from Corkestra and the Anthony Braxton Sextet, and electronic and noise, as a sign of the times, from Nels Cline and the Mandarin Movie, all of this complemented by the acoustic sounds of the Claudia Quintet and solos from Evan Parker and Le Quan Ninh.
To celebrate the history of jazz, we will present an original talk by Evan Parker on John Coltrane, another talk by the American critic Larry Appelbaum on the discovery of the acclaimed and previously unheard recording of John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk at Carnegie Hall in 1957 (released by Blue Note in 2005) and also a 16 mm film loaned to us by the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. with Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Gil Evans.
Welcome to Jazz in August 2006, exploring Coltrane's legacy.
